Despite a wave of momentum on the precursor circuit — including nominations at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Critics’ Choice Awards — propelling her toward her first Academy Award nod, Hustlers star Jennifer Lopez was left out of the Best Supporting Actress race Monday morning upon the announcement of the 92nd Oscar nominations. And the internet (as well as filmmaker-actor Tyler Perry) is not happy about it.

“I’m upset, man,” Perry told paparazzi early Monday before expressing frustration over both Lopez’s and The Farewell star Awkwafina’s Oscars snubs. “J.Lo didn’t get nominated, are you kidding me? She should have gotten nominated,” he continued. “That’s crazy.”

“When Jennifer Lopez invites you to climb into her fur, you’re supposed to say yes,” Oscar prognosticator Kyle Buchanan tweeted, referencing both the Academy’s snub and a sweet scene in the Lorene Scafaria-directed crime drama that sees veteran stripper Ramona (Lopez) wrapping her protégé, Destiny (Constance Wu), in her arms on a chilly evening atop a New York City gentlemen’s club.

Keep It podcast cohost Louis Virtel quipped that learning of Lopez’s snub made him “the saddest I’ve ever felt for Jennifer Lopez since ‘Dear Ben,'” the entertainer’s 2002 song about her now ex-lover, Ben Affleck.

Journalist Hunter Harris added that to honor the 50-year-old icon, she would wear a “nude glossy lip in honor of Jennifer Lopez and her stolen Oscar nomination.”

Reaction to Lopez’s snub has landed as social media also derided the Academy for nominating another all-male slate of Best Director nominees, despite a recent push forLittle Women helmer Greta Gerwig to receive her second overall nomination in the category (which would have made her the first woman in history to achieve two of such nods). Though Little Women received a Best Picture nomination, only three films directed by women scored above-the-line nods across all categories: Little Women, Harriet, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

In the run-up to the Oscars, Hustlers — which followed a group of strip club employees who turned the tables on their wealthy Wall Street clients by scamming them out of cash in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis — made a strong bid for Academy attention, becoming Lopez’s first live-action film to gross more than $100 million at the domestic box office on top of garnering strong critical reviews (and heavy Oscar buzz) out of its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.

“I hope it happens for Jen,” Wu previously told EW of her Oscar ambitions for Lopez’s performance, which involved the multi-hyphenate performer training with a mobile stripper pole and an aerialist trainer for months prior to filming. “I think she deserves it for her whole life, really.”

One thing’s for sure, as Netflix’s Jarett Wieselman summed up: “J.Lo is gonna EAT the [Super Bowl] halftime show on another level now.”
